Tobias Jesso Jr., singer-songwriter from Vancouver, brings us a flash of the past with his debut album Goon. Reminiscent to greats from the 70s, Tobias is making his mark on global musics radar. We first heard Tobias in April 2014, and were captured by the piano-driven ballad, “Hollywood.” With anticipation building up to his release of Goon, he has since released two additional singles, “How Could You Babe,” and “Without You.” Jesso has also performed on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.
Goon, an intimate, twelve track story of Jesso’s personal life, stands out in the immense realm of releases in 2015. With majority of new releases being overproduced, or worrying over ‘loudness’ or layering as many tracks as possible on one another, Goon is the exact opposite. This is as minimal as we can get from a studio album. Tobias’ vocals are the focus of every track, always paired with a piano, guitar or violin, and the occasional drum kit. It’s hard to rank any of the tracks, because they’re all well crafted masterpieces. With the piano-ballad era over, Tobias Jesso Jr. is one of the few newcomers trying to revive the genre, and it’s off to a great start.
