Gentlemen, ladies and others, if you’re looking for some solid inspiration to get you off the couch, or just for something to motivate you, please turn and run. J/K….Look no further than Derek Hough or Derek Hough’s Instagram. A five-time champion of the Dancing With the Stars Mirror Ball Trophy, and two-time winner of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography, Derek is as positive minded and yet, as humble as it gets.
Ferrvor hung out with Derek Hough for half a day as our Creative Director and Celebrity Photographer, Kaleb Khu, took some candid shots of this Mover and Shaker.

After moving to London at age 12 to study with ballroom and Latin dance instructors, Corky and Shirley Ballas, who’s son incidentally is Mark Ballas on Dancing with the Stars, Hough tells Ferrvor.com that he’s “always envisioned being on stage in front of thousands of people.”
Derek, thanks for joining us today. You’re a very talented man – who is your muse, do you actually have one?
My muse isn’t just one thing or one person, it’s many things. Fear is a strong muse for me. Fear of complacency and things like that push me to work harder and to improve.
Ditto on that. Who is Derek’s alter ego? Does he have a name?
I can be very silly and I like to have a good time, so I think that being a hard worker and so focused most of the time, my alter ego is just me when I get to relax and have fun. Sometimes I call myself, “Frank the Tank.”
What’s one #Hashtag that would sum up your life and why?
#Passion – I was told at a young age to live with passion and that sums up a lot of things in my life. Work hard, but work passionately hard and be fully committed to what you’re doing. I think living with passion and doing things the best you possibly can is important. That motto stuck with me from a young age and is something I strive to live by.

If theres any one thing that you could improve on a bit, what is it?
I could improve on a lot of things! Too many to count.
Ferrvor is all about dressing well and living well. On that note, what’s Derek’s definition of being a Gentleman?
I think to be a gentleman means to be present, to be there in the moment. I think if you’re there in the moment and you’re listening to whomever you’re with, that’s a very gentleman-like quality.
What was the young Derek like?
Young Derek was crazy, spastic, and full of energy!

It seems you’ve kept your youthful spirit. You have tons of energy! You have been on tour for a while, what’s your favorite city and what is the craziest story you care to share?
I love Chicago, but a lot of the smaller cities we go to that I’d never heard of end up being the coolest places. As far as fun stories, I was in Raleigh, North Carolina and it started raining like crazy, and the stage was wet, so they were going to stop the show but I just jumped out there and started dancing and singing in the rain and we did the whole show and it ended up being so much fun!
You told us that you are obsessed with your Diesel boots. If your boots could talk to us, what would it say to us about you?
They would say please fix me! They could tell you where I’ve been – I’ve danced and traveled in them a lot. Actually, they’d probably say “give me a rest.”
Since you live in Los Angeles, what’s your favorite place to go on the weekends?
I need to go more, but I love going to the beach. Something about the ocean is very humbling. To be honest though, I much prefer mountains and lakes over the ocean.
You have a big family, what was it like growing up with four sisters?
It was good. They’re good sisters. I was dressed up like a girl sometimes, unfortunately. But for me it was very normal, it’s all I’ve ever known.

Who would win in a dance-off competition in your family?
Probably Sharee, my oldest sister. She’s so aggressive and full out whenever she dances that she would probably do something crazy like knock one of us out with her leg – which may or may not have happened before.
Do you have any Hobbies?
Wakeboarding, drawing, painting and photography to name a few.
You’ve always wanted to be a pro dancer, but if the cards were dealt differently and you were not a professional dancer, what would you be doing?
I would love to be a speaker, to help and inspire others or maybe something like an architect, where I could build and create things and see a finished product. I’d have to be working with people.
You’re a people person for sure. What’s a fun day for Derek Hough?
Waking up at 6am, going to the gym, then spending the day on the lake wakeboarding, wave running, hanging out on the boat. Then maybe after a whole day on the lake, going to get sushi, watching a movie and eating a ton of popcorn.

Any favorite moment(s) from this season with DWTS you could share with us?
There’s been a few this season. I’ve had so many amazing moments with Bindi. One in particular was the Dirty Dancing lift. I was a little nervous but I was so happy when we did it!
If we happened to go on an adventure with you, where would we go and who would you take with us?
I’m getting ready for a big adventure to New Zealand, Australia, Honduras, Hawaii, and some other places. Utah is actually a great place for adventures too. There’s some amazing national parks, hiking, and extraordinary views. Maybe we would go cave diving!
That sounds like fun. Appreciate you spending some time with Ferrvor Magazine.
It seems Hough’s dreams of being on stage, in front of thousands of people, have come true and are much bigger then he ever imagined.
