Evan Ross, is the son of old school, music royalty. From birth, he was surrounded by artistic greats, among the likes of Michael Jackson and of course, his mother, Diana Ross. It’d be easy to assume with that privilege, that one’s ego might be unchecked if you were born into a family of high regard. But there’s something very different about Evan Ross, something quite pleasant and more than one would typically expect based on the obvious.

In truth, Evan Ross is as authentic as it gets. He’s one of those rare gems, a unique soul, free flowing in today’s world, where following the grain is the thing to do, doing whatever it takes to give you the most “likes” on a page or the most talk in the media. It’s safe to say that Evan Ross follows the beat of his own drum, or in his case, the melody to his own tunes.
Ferrvor spent the day on set with him at the largely unnoticed, funky Hollywood hideout, Good Times at Davey Wayne’s.
Evan has no problem commanding a room. In fact, it isn’t just his crooner voice that makes a statement, but it’s his aura that says it all. He’s confident, self-assured, and a down to earth guy. We set his tunes of choice on the speakers, Michael Jackson, of course, and he sings along with each track that plays. It’s a treat to watch and listen to, as we begin another long day on set.
He owns his fashion sense, breaking away from simple tee shirt and jeans outfits, but instead spices it up with his own flavor and accessories like fedoras, scarves and jewelry, not to mention sporting blonde hair.
He’s had multiple roles in both television and the big screen, including the coming of age story, ATL, 90210, and recently the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1 & 2. And that’s not the only thing Evan has been working on. He released his single, “How To Live Alone,” featuring T.I., who also happens to play his big brother Rashad in ATL, with the sequel rumored to be in the works. The 27 year old actor and musician, is not only an artist, but a family man. He and his wife, Ashlee Simpson, welcomed their daughter, Jagger Snow Ross, into the world in July. And although fatherhood has changed his world, it hasn’t slowed him down when it comes to his talents.
We took a break from the photos and flashing lights, sat down and got to know a little bit more about the man himself.
Ferrvor: As an actor, Evan Ross is?
Evan Ross: Artistically driven.
F: What kind of music moves you?
ER: I would say any sort of melodic music.
F: Where do you go to unplug and be inspired?
ER: To unplug, I would say the studio. To be inspired, I like to be with my family at home.
F: Growing up in Hollywood with a famous mother must have been a wild ride. What have you learned from your career in Hollywood thus far?
ER: I’ve learned a lot of things, but I think the most important thing is to follow your gut and only do things because you really believe in them.
F: In your opinion, what’s the greatest song of all time?
ER: I have a lot so this is a difficult question. If I were to only choose one I would have to say “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To)” by my Mom. It’s a great song that really makes you think.
F: If we get a chance to spend 24 hours with you, what would it be like? What would we be doing?
ER: I would probably be taking care of my baby and spending time with my wife. Outside of that, I love being creative and exploring new ideas in music, film and fashion.
F: Evan Ross as a father is? What’s the hardest part of being a dad?
ER: Awake. The hardest part of being a Dad would have to be watching my baby girl cry.
F: Your favorite place to hang out in Los Angeles is?
ER: I don’t go out as much now that I have a baby, but when I do go out I would have to say my favorite place to hangout is Warwick in Hollywood.
F: What’s the phrase that you commonly use, maybe too much?
ER: I say ‘I love you’ a lot, but I don’t think that is a phrase that could be said too much when you truly mean it.
F: Our motto at Ferrvor Magazine is “For the Fashion Driven Man” Can you describe your fashion sense and what is exciting to you about the world of Mens fashion?
ER: My fashion sense comes from things that I am inspired by and I wear clothes that inspire me. What excites me about fashion, is that it gives me the opportunity to be creative and open to new ideas. I feel like men’s fashion is evolving and men are now getting to a place where we can really venture into new styles and wear more unique things.
F: Any advice you could give our readers about menswear?
ER: In terms of advice about menswear, I would say don’t be scared to try something new and step out of your comfort zone. Try to create and express who you are through your clothing so if someone saw you or took a picture of you they know what you are about and your story.
F: Evan Ross must have(s)?
ER: 1. Wedding ring. I always wear it to remind me of my wife and family.
2. My hat. Even if I am not going to wear it, I like to have it around just in case.
3. ‘Red Hot’ Hot Sauce. My mom introduced me to it at a very young age. We both use it a lot and I always bring it with me.
F: What are some of your big milestones, accomplishments in your life?
ER: My biggest milestone would be getting married and starting my family. They are what keep me alive and happy.
F: You are seen in the latest Hunger Games release, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2. How has the experience been working on such a huge movie franchise?
ER: It has been phenomenal and was bigger than I could ever have expected. It has been an incredible experience that probably trumps any movie I have ever worked on before, in terms of what they were able to create.
F:Agreed, that movie franchise is definitely one of the best we’ve seen. And finally, what is your favorite inspirational quote to live by and why?
ER:You can do anything you set your mind to. I believe in it, and I remember my mom telling me at a young age that, there is nothing I can’t do if I try hard enough, and I truly believe in it. She is proof of that.
As the day comes to a close, Evan shares with us his experience on the Ferrvor set. “It had moments. It felt musical. It was kind of a sensational shoot.” And we couldn’t agree more.
