On Wednesday January 7th, Tinker Hatfield took the stage at #AgendaEmerge in Long Beach, CA. While speaking to the sold out crowd he addressed, Nike Air Mag to release Back to the Future shoes in 2015 with powered lace. While Tinker reminded us that there are still 11 months left in the year he confirmed the company was working really hard towards this release.
The Nike Air MAG was designed by Tinker in the 80’s for Back to the Future II. The film took place in 2015 thus the shoe was created to mirror what he thought shoes would look like in 21st century.
In 2011 the Nike Air MAG officially released with a limited quantity of 1,500 pairs, all proceeds of this model’s sales went towards the Michael J Fox foundation. The foundation brought in nearly $6 million in proceeds and an additional $11.2 million through various investors proving an incredibly successful launch. However one key element was missing from the design, powered laces.
According to Dezeen Nike filed a US Patent for self-lacing shoes in July 2014, featuring motorised rollers embedded in the soles. These would be activated by a control system that could either be operated using a button on the side or respond to changes in weight, wrapping the ends of the laces around themselves and creating a tightening effect.
Meanwhile Back to the Future II hoverboard still teases our senses and curiosities with as much gusto as the first time we set eyes on it. What better way to don a shoe with powered laces than on a overboard defying gravity?
