POWER RANGERS DEBOOT

Launched in August of 1993, The Power Rangers became an instant cultural phenomena. Despite the shows popularity, it was the subject of much controversy over the shows violence for the young at heart.

The show takes place in Angel Grove, California and is about a group of teenagers who were chosen to protect the world from a group of alien invaders and were given the ability to “morph” into super-powered warriors and to pilot giant robots called “Zords.” The show continued on until 1995.

Fast forward to 2015 as we welcome Director Joseph Kahn’s fan film bootleg interpretation. Produced by Adi Shankar (Dredd, Lone Survivor and The Grey), Kahn himself has an impressive resume’ directing numerous music video’s and feature Films like Torque and Detention, not to mention two other well received bootlegs, Venom (starring Ryan Kwanten) and The Punisher (starring Thomas Jane).

This version of the Power Rangers is sure to quickly become a fan favorite with it’s gratuitous over the top graphic violence and sexual overtones between a Power Ranger and two villains that are both porn stars in real life. In an interview with HitFlix, Kahn explains that “this was meant as a satire”. “Taking Hollywood’s ‘Dark and Gritty’ reboots as far as it could go. The dark and gritty reboot thing is such a cliché that the intention was not only to make it dark and gritty but make it even darker and grittier than you could possibly imagine, hence the brains, the blood and the violence and the sex.”

Kahn goes on to say  that “the joke isn’t that you’re laughing at each particular scene; the joke is that we did this ‘f**k you’ thing in the first place. You’re going to look at it and you go wow I can’t believe they f**king did that.”

All we can say is that the Ferrvor office was buzzing with excitement as we watched, laughing along as we’re all fans of the series. It’s not for everyone, but we think it’s worth the :15 minutes.
